Anti-aging Skin Care
Anti-aging
skin care products have seen a tremendous growth in popularity over the last
few
decades. This growth has a lot to do with the fact that
we are all living and working longer.
The importance of having healthy skin cannot
be over-emphasized, so a great deal of effort
goes into the preparation of beauty products, especially products that increase
collagen production. Collagen is the primary protein in skin, and is
so abundant, it makes up about 25% of the total protein content of
structural protein found in the skin.
Anti-aging skin care products are in fact
related to another group of products that help reduce the signs of
aging, known as antioxidants. Antioxidants help to remove toxins from the body.
Although the benefits of vitamin C (an antioxidant) are well documented, it
is still debated as to what the daily requirement should be. Vitamin C formulated
skin care treatments suffer with the particular problem of oxidizing on
contact with the air which causes a problem for users and manufacturers.
To deal with this problem, companies began manufacturing anti-aging
skin care products
that are based on derivatives of
vitamin C, which are more stable and less expensive. Unfortunately, the
antioxidant products used to replace vitamin C are not as effective, but
since
vitamin E and lipoic acid can both have the same effect, it's not considered
to be a major problem.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that is found in human blood. It helps
us to build resistance against infections. Lipoic acid is an energy
producing component of the body, found in every cell, that also helps to
reduce the aging process.
Phytochemicals form another category of anti-aging skin care products
which are special chemicals that are extracted from plants, and have a wide variety of
uses for skin care. An additional benefit of phytochemicals
is their ability to prevent the onset of prostate cancer, breast cancer, and
colon cancer.
It has also been known for some
time now that the vitamins B5, B6 and B12 have anti-aging properties
as well. This helps to emphasize just
how complex and far reaching the whole field of anti-ageing skin care
products is, and why so much more research is required.
In time, new discoveries will be made advancing our understanding of the
aging process, and products that can reduce or reverse the effects more
successfully are on the horizon. There may still be many challenges to overcome, but in time,
scientists believe they will succeed in producing more effective anti-aging
skin care products, that are less expensive and available to more people.
Fortunately, there are a number of natural skin care methods which can be
undertaken that do not rely on science. Regular sleep patterns, proper
hydration, exercise, a healthy diet, and less stress, all contribute to reducing the signs
of aging.
